Where our words come together in a daily email.

Restraint

My impulses feel like instructions.

Urgent.

Obvious.

Necessary.

They’re not.

I don’t need more action.

I need less reactions.

Reflecting on my reactions

uncovered the nine restraints.

That’s how I use restraint.

To protect my energy.

Restraint is a filter.

It’s the part of me that guides

what not to do.

The actions that never

(did you say never?)

never work.

These inactions filter my options.

It’s not about knowing what to do.

It’s about knowing what not to repeat.

Like:

“I don’t pretend I’m fine

when I know I’m not.

Restraint is owning the truth as I perceive it to be.”

Or:

“I don’t pursue or claim certainty.

Restraint is pursuing closer to right.”

It uncovers the loop.

It discovers the pattern.

It discards the action.

What’s left are only the options that align.

What helps me stay aligned

is knowing what not to do.
