Application and usage are two of them.
Most of the time we treat them like synonyms.
They aren’t.
Usage simply means employing something.
Applying it loosely.
Using it when convenient.
Bringing it out when it seems helpful.
Usage is situational.
Application is different.
Application means putting something into operation
according to its principles.
Not when it’s easy.
When it’s required.
Usage describes frequency.
Application submits to it.
I can use an idea occasionally.
Quote it.
Reference it.
Repeat it.
That’s usage.
Application is when the idea begins organizing my behavior.
Changing how I think.
How I relate.
How I act.
Usage is light contact.
Application is structural.
Most ideas live their entire lives in usage.
They sound wise.
They travel well.
They rarely change anything.
Application is quieter.
Less impressive.
It shows up in decisions.
In restraint.
In the small moments where a principle interrupts instinct.
Usage spreads ideas.
Application develops the lives around them.
