Pronoun Usage

People are suddenly very serious about pronouns.

How they’re used.

Which ones apply.

What they signal.

The conversation can get intense.

Precise.

Almost surgical.

Which makes sense.

Pronouns matter.

I’ve noticed something else.

Pronouns do more than describe identity.

They reveal orientation.

They quietly tell the story we’re living inside.

Some pronouns critique.

Some relate.

Some connect.

Most of us use them without noticing the position they put us in.

See what I did there? To you, to us?

The smallest word in a sentence carries the largest assumption.

You.

Us.

We.

Three tiny words.

Three very different ways of standing inside a moment.

One judges behavior.

One recognizes relationship.

One accepts shared humanity.

Pronouns look like grammar.

They are perceptions.

They reveal how I’m positioned in the story that’s unfolding.

That position shapes everything that follows.
